SCULPTURES

Sculptures

Breen’s interest in ceramics developed around his collection of antique and modern pottery. In 1961 he began working with clay himself. He found working on a potter’s wheel frustrating, it was obvious that it would take years of practice to achieve a level of quality that would satisfy his own standards. He turned to hand-building with clay, using slabs and coils, to create sculpture. This he enjoyed, finding that it related in same ways to painting.

From early childhood Breen has had a special interest in animals, wild and domestic. So when his wife suggested his first sculpture in clay be a rhinoceros, he made one for her. A close friend saw the sculpture and decided Breen should make a unicorn for her husband’s garden so she could say on Christmas morning, “Marvin, there’s a unicorn in the your garden eating flowers.” Breen protested that he wasn’t a sculptor and recommended a colleague who was. The friend held firm, Breen relented, and thus began a menagerie of ceramic animals.
